Hastings Residence
A playful yet sophisticated bathroom renovation where handcrafted materials, soft colour palettes and precise tile installation come together to create a timeless contemporary space.
Designed in collaboration with the builder and interior designer, this project features handcrafted blush wall tiles, custom terrazzo vanity and bath surrounds, and a bespoke mosaic floor that introduces texture and subtle movement beneath the clean architectural forms.
Although the materials appear effortless, the installation demanded meticulous planning and precision throughout. The handcrafted wall tiles each carried natural variation in size, glaze and surface texture, requiring continual adjustment during installation to maintain consistent grout joints while embracing the individuality that gives handcrafted ceramics their character.
The vertically stacked layout was carefully established to maintain perfectly aligned joints around windows, corners, fixtures and architectural transitions, creating a balanced finish throughout the space. The bespoke mosaic floor required intricate set-out to achieve a symmetrical layout while integrating seamlessly into the wall tiling and drainage. Every transition between terrazzo, ceramic tile and mosaic flooring was carefully detailed to produce crisp, refined junctions without compromising the softness of the overall design.
The result is a bathroom that feels warm, playful and understated, where technical precision allows handcrafted materials to become the defining feature.
